I love to watch the warm-ups for a 100m Olympic sprint. I get a kick out of seeing if I can pick the winner. When sizing up the competitors there is one thing I always look for. Who is most ‘in the zone’?
Isn’t it a great expression? And what a feeling it is – this experience of being in the zone.
Of course you don’t have to be a world class athlete to achieve this state. Anybody, in whatever task or discipline they are involved, will benefit from being ‘in the zone’. It’s a way of maximizing efficiency and productivity without stress. But, what is involved in being ‘in the zone’? And is it possible to switch on such a state at will?
To answer this, let’s go back to the 100m final. As the competitors go through their warm-ups what are the key elements to observe which give one guy the edge his rivals?
The first one I look for is stillness. More than physical stillness, here I am referring to the absence of agitation an inner stillness. Most of the time, even when physically still, a person’s darting eyes or nervous twitches betray an inner agitation.
Out of this stillness and inner calm comes focus, the second quality I look to observe. It is important that the focus follows the stillness, otherwise the focus may come from tension. Anyone familiar with Chinese internal martial arts will know that tension limits the amount of power that can be unleashed.
Thirdly, I look for the guy who moves as though in a bubble. Not a mental bubble as in a detached fantasy world, but an energetic bubble that extends his energy around him in a tangible way. In layman’s terms this could be described as ‘presence’ – as in the expression ‘he gives off an aura of confidence’ or ‘has an air of confidence’ about him.
So if being in the zone involves inner stillness, focus and presence how do you switch these qualities on?
That is the topic we propose to address in our next free lecture and then the one-day workshop at the New York Core Center. See the details below for more information about these events:
